There is nothing specific you need to do however a sleeping baby is best! We understand this is hard to plan around appointment times though so please know that there is no pressure! If bub wont sleep, one particular great distraction is feeding! If you are happy to feed them during the appointment (we can cast them while being fed) that would be really helpful too. For an older child you could bring a toy or object they enjoy playing with or looking at. We have a high chair too so you could also bring some snacks for them to eat in the high chair as this can be helpful doing their feet. We have a TV in the clinic with netflix as well! You are welcome to bring your partner, family member, or friend along to help. It’s often a team effort!

A bit of wiggling fine - it helps the alginate get into all the crinkles and creases! Sometimes if it’s too much and for too long, l will need to retake the mould. We’ll follow the lead of your little one and give them breaks and choose our moments carefully. Sometimes it just isn’t their day, and that’s OK too. If so, we can either book a follow up sessions, or we can make do with the casts we managed to get and decide on a different final design.

Please dress in clothing that you don’t mind getting a bit of gloop on (although we try our best not to - casting can be a little messy)! Anything that can easily be rolled up or taken off is great. The moulding material can stick to some fabrics and can be tricky to get off.

We use alginate and luke warm tap water. Alginate is a seaweed-based material which is hypo-allergenic and safe to use on even the most delicate skin – it is even safe in the mouth as it is most commonly used in dentistry for taking teeth impressions. We have never had anyones skin react badly to the product we use but if you are concerned in anyway please let us know.

It takes 2 weeks from the day of your casting to complete. If you are choosing a product with an image though, it will be a 2 week turnaround from when we receive your image to complete the casting. Castings normally take 4-5 weeks to dry however we use a specific casting drying method which allows us to turn around your casting in half the normal time.
